Blog tour: ‘Roots of Love,’ by Sarah Asuquo, illustrated by Ruthine Burton.

I have been asked on a number of occasions for picture books which explore parental separation or divorce, and it’s a request I’ve always found quite difficult to fulfil. Thankfully, the publication of ‘Roots of Love’ has made that search an awful lot easier!

“Tia has had the best day ever, until her parents tell her that they are separating. To top it off, she has to present a project at school all about her family.

With the help of her school friends, can Tia learn that there are many different types of family, and that each one can be full of love and happiness?”

Picture books are such a brilliant way of starting conversations about difficult topics with children, and ones about parental separation are quite tricky to find – which is surprising given how common this is today. We need more books like ‘Roots of Love’ which can help a child navigate changes in their family and explore any worries they may have.

I liked that, along with Tia, readers can explore and recognise that there are many different types of families and that they can all be full of love. A reassuring message for children going through a difficult time.

This may be a helpful choice to support any child whose family is going through changes or as a starting point for parents who want to talk to their child.
