First Chapter Book Update

There are so many wonderful first chapter books for readers who are seeking something a little wordier alongside their picture books. Although there really is something for everyone, there are some key components that most titles in this format share:

  • Highly-illustrated
  • Larger print
  • Clear text layout
  • Tonnes of fun!
These are some of the books I’ve been sent recently.

Full of mischief, mystery, and teamwork, this book features a cat and dog detective duo. For readers aged 5+

“Watts doesn’t think he’s got what it takes to be a great detective like his parents. So when they jet off on their next case, he decides to take a holiday to Whiskerton Manor instead.

But there, Watts befriends Pearl Whiskerton, a curious cat with a nose for mysteries, who persuades him to help her investigate a series of strange goings on at the manor . . .

Who’s been upending the precious rose bushes? And where did the amazing dinosaur bones dug up on the grounds come from?

It looks like the two things might be connected. But can this dog and cat detective duo solve the mystery?”

This is a super-funny series about a panda with a penchant for mischief. ‘Bad Panda for Sale!’ is actually the final instalment so make sure you head back and read the others first!

“Oh no! The zoo is going to close! And all of the animals will be sent back to where they came from.

Lin the Bad Panda is happy about the idea of being returned to the panda sanctuary from where she came. She can’t wait to be reunited with her beloved brother, Face-Like-A-Bag-Of-Potatoes.

But Lin is definitely NOT happy about being separated from her new-found zoo family.

Surely all the animals should be kept together?

This is a job for the baddest of pandas! Lin will need RAGE and BAD BEHAVIOUR. Only then will she be able to keep her zoo family in one place.”

Marv is back in his super-suit powered by kindness and imagination, ready for another adventure! 5+

“In Marv and the Alien Invasion, Marvin is on a school trip to the Space Centre when supervillain Cosmic and his mischievous alien sidekicks crash on to the scene. After causing complete chaos, Cosmic heads off to steal the Space Centre’s rocket.

Marvin and Pixel won’t let them get away with this. It’s time for Marvin to become MARV-unstoppable, invincible, and totally MARVellous! Only then can Marv put an end to Cosmic’s scheme and rescue the rocket from his clutches.”

Croaky is the amphibious creation of Matty Long, so it will be no surprise that’s it full to the brim of madcap humour and adventure! 5+

“Croaky Hopper isn’t like other little frogs. His head is filled with thoughts of wild adventures. He dreams of hopping across crocodile-infested waters, or being chased by a giant boulder, just like the famous TV explorer Tennessee Toad. But where can an energetic amphibian like Croaky find real-life adventure? When his Aunt Lilly signs him up for the Woggle Scouts, he expects to spend his time crafting with pinecones and selling cookies, but he soon discovers there’s much more in store . . .

In Legendary Berry Quest, the woggle scouts take off in an old biplane to explore Giant Fruit Island. There they search for a mythical fruit that promises everlasting youth, but soon find their efforts blocked by mischievous lemurs, giant Grow Worms, and perilous river rapids.”

We join Reggie Rabbit as he tries to solve his second mystery – a potential haunting. This series features some brilliant graphic novel-style layouts to break up the text. 6+

“Reggie Rabbit isn’t sure about his best friend Pipsquark’s other best friend, Kai. She seems too good to be true and he doesn’t believe her stories about the terrifying ghost that is haunting Seagull Rock, where her family live. But when Reggie and Pipsquark are invited to Kai’s for a sleepover, they hear the ghost howling with their own ears! Could it really be the phantom of seagull pirate Blackbeak? Or is something else afoot?
In this fast-paced detective adventure nothing is quite what it seems. The young detectives will have to use their ears, snouts, and tread with careful paws if they are to get to the bottom of this case. Sometimes you can’t even trust the evidence of your own eyes!”

I love whatever Philip Reeve & Sarah McIntyre create together – you’re always going to get something high quality, super-engaging, and with sumptuous illustrations. 5+

“The spookiest time of the year calls for a treasure hunt! So when the Adventuremice hear about ghostly goings-on at sea, they try to get to the bottom of the mystery of old Captain Cheesebeard and his ancient treasure hoard!”

Harriet Muncaster is able to cast a special kind of magic with her books which have hordes of young fans clamouring for more. Luckily for them, there’s a brand new Mirabelle adventure to enjoy. 5+

“In the hustle and bustle of Witch City, Mirabelle and best friend Carlotta get separated from their school group. What are they going to do? Make mischief, of course! Bright lights, big city, here they come.

Illustrated throughout in witchy purple and black by author/illustrator Harriet Muncaster, Mirabelle is perfect for readers who are looking for a first chapter book with a healthy dose of mischief and magic. This book will have you cackling with glee!”

All of Jarvis’s work is wonderful so I was excited to see he’d published an early chapter book exploring friendships and feelings. 5+

“Bear and Bird are best friends! And while they don’t always understand each other, they both agree: all they want is to make the other happy. So, when Bird feels poorly, Bear arrives with a backpack of goodies to make her feel better. And when they hang out with Mole – who tells absolutely hilarious jokes! – Bird realizes she doesn’t need to compete for Bear’s attention; that there is lots of laughter to go around…”

Hopefully you’ve found something new to recommend or read. If you’re still searching for inspiration, take a look at some of my other first chapter book round-ups HERE or HERE.

Happy reading!
