‘Blitz One Family’s War,’ by Martin Impey.

I have long been an admirer of Martin Impey’s gorgeous illustrations so was thrilled to receive a copy of ‘Blitz’ – his latest title which perfectly captures one family’s struggle to maintain a ‘normal’ day-to-day life in a raid-ravaged London. It was inspired by the childhood stories told to him by his grandparents who lived through the London air raids themselves.

“Blitz One Family’s War tells the moving story of a family living in the East End of London during WW2. It is told from the perspective and memories of a brother & sister who watched their ordinary world change around them. From the outbreak of war and waving their father off to fight the Nazis, to their relentless nightly runs to the air raid shelters and wondering if their home would still be there in the morning. ln the 247 glorious illustrations, this book celebrates the never say die spirit of the people from the many cities in those dark days, who kept calm and carried on.”

Each wonderful double-page spread is a window into what life was like for British civilians during that frightening time.

Through Impey’s detailed and evocative illustrations, readers are taken on an emotional journey with a boy and his family, experiencing the highs and lows which were typical of that time.

This is a beautifully-crafted book which Impey has carefully researched and sensitively presented. It is absolutely something to become immersed in and shared with younger generations.
