I always think the summer holidays are the perfect excuse to indulge in a stack of new books, whether from a bookshop or your local library. Babies and toddlers benefit just as much as older children from listening to books being read to them and interacting with peep-through and flaps – neural pathways are strengthened, vocabulary is developed and bonding occurs. What’s not to love?!
‘Dotty and Dash’s 1,2,3’ by Patricia Hegarty and Craig Shuttlewood (Little Tiger Press)
This stunning pop-up book helps teach little ones to count from 1-10, then in jumps of ten to 100. I’ve never come across a counting book which goes all the way to 100 before so love that this one does! Told in rhyme with gorgeous illustrations with plenty to count, this pop-up title is a little bit special. 3+
The ‘Little White Fish’ series by Guido Van Genechten (Catch a Star Books)
This lovely series features Little White Fish who goes on lots of adventures with mummy. They have bold illustrations which are brilliantly set off by the predominantly black backgrounds to the pages.
As you swim in the ocean visiting friends, you’ll learn lots of new prepositions, pairs of opposites and all about colours. A strangely calming and reassuring series. 2+
‘I Love My Llamacorn’ by Prisca Le Tandé (Little Tiger Press)

Take a walk through the jungle trees and you might just find a tiger if you look hard enough. A gorgeous little book with felt flaps, peep holes and textured pages to explore.
Little ones will learn the names of a whole host of jungle creatures and discover new habitats as well as hunting for all the creatures hidden in the bold and beautiful illustrations. 0+

I love this series of lift-the-clap books from Nosy Crow and Mr Unicorn is no exception. Designed for sharing with very littlest readers, set off on a quest to find some well-loved magical creatures. Dragons, fairies and mermaids lurk within!
As gorgeously illustrated as I’ve come to expect, the felt flaps and colourful characters don’t fail to disappoint. Although my favourite part has to be the special mirrored page at the end! 0+
