‘Fighting Fantasy: The Gates Of Death,’ by Charlie Higson, cover illustration by Robert Ball.

When I was younger, I was a huge fan of the tv show, ‘Knightmare,’ and of the ‘choose your own path’ adventure books. So imagine my excitement when the newest Fighting Fantasy adventure popped through my letterbox!

’Part story, part game – you are the hero!’

Based on the successful Fighting Fantasy series by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone, the adventure is penned by bestselling author Charlie Higson. Do you have the nerve to defeat the all-powerful Queen of Chaos who’s growing more terrible than ever behind the Gates of Death?

The people of Allansia are willing you to be successful on your quest to the Temple of Miracles in the Invisible City to find the smoke-oil antidote they so desperately need. But the path is far from smooth, with trials and tribulations at every turn.  Will you be able to hold your nerve til the very end or will your stamina fail you? The choice is yours, just choose a number!

A fantastic series that is guaranteed to capture the imaginations of a new generation of gamers and warriors. Just the right level of mortal peril to hold them enthralled until their luck or their nerve runs out.  Quite scary in parts so probably best for readers aged 9+

Library Girl.
