June’s bundle was themed around shape, with a donation from each purchase going to the charity, “All Shapes and Sizes.” We received two fantastic books and some excellent shape-based activities to try.
Change the Shape by Andy Mansfield (Templar Publishing)
What an absolutely ingenious book! I was expecting a simple ‘lift the flap’ style board book, but what I discovered was a cleverly designed brain-teaser that challenged my spacial awareness and skills of perception. Hours of fun could be had hunting for hiding shapes, constructing stars and using the kaleidoscopic final pages to create shapes of your own. What a find!
Stripe Island by Tupera Tupera (Thames and Hudson)
Visit Stripe Island, where you can eat stripy cake, visit the stripy town square and enjoy the fabulous Festival of Stripes! See the strongman lift the stripy elephant, marvel at the world’s smallest stripy bug and watch the sun set over the stripy sea. A true celebration of all things stripy which would lend itself beautifully to discussions about stripes, shapes and glorious colours. Quirky, colourful fun!
Activities: we received a classic tangram along with some suggestions as to some of the pictures we could try to make using them, providing a great opportunity to talk with Book Boy Jr. about different 2D shapes and their properties. We also had a lot of fun creating pictures using the shiny green shape stickers included.
Giveaway! The lovely team at The Happy Book Club have given me one set of books from their July bundle to giveaway to one lucky person! To enter, just comment on this blog post by Wednesday 13th June (UK only).
Library Girl.
These books look fantastic. I’m an Early Years Teacher and the children I work with would get so much from these books. Brilliant review!
