Today it’s my turn to cheerlead for one of the brilliant nominees for the Federation of Children’s Book Groups (FCBG) Children’s Book Award. The finalists were chosen by the children in the book groups and the overall winners are voted for by their readers.
As a fan of funny books, I was asked to represent the hilarious ‘Funny Kid Stand Up’ by Matt Stanton (Harper Collins) which is the second title in the Funny Kid series, with a third on the way.
Max has spent his time in school honing his comic timing and carving his niche as ‘the funny kid’ in class, so when the Redhill Talent Quest visits town he naturally presumes that the title is his.
However, when he gets to the auditions a newcomer seems determined to destroy him. There’s nothing funny about Tumbles the Clown! Whilst everyone else seems to find the red-nosed comedian hilarious, Max can’t help but think there’s something suspicious about him. Could Tumbles possibly be responsible for the strange disappearance of his granddad?
I can see why this book was voted as a finalist by its readers – packed full of (terrible) jokes, a scattering of sarcasm, loads of illustrations and some brilliant comic strip inserts. All this makes for a laugh-filled read with mystery, self-doubt and hi-jinx.
To vote for Funny Kid Stand Up (or one of the other titles) visit the Children’s Book Award website HERE. One lucky voter will win a pair of tickets to the awards ceremony!
Make sure you take a peek at the reviews of all the other nominated titles and vote for your favourite!
May the best book win!
