“The Cloud Horse Chronicles: Guardians Of Magic,” by Chris Riddell.

I am a huge fan of Chris Ridell’s work – stories and illustrations – so imagine my excitement when I discovered he was writing a brand new magical adventure series AND that I was invited to be part of its blog tour!

The Kingdom Of Thrynne is a place of ancient magic, but those seen to wield it are in terrible danger. Deep in The Great Wood is The Forever Tree whose wood can be carved into implements containing  great power. However, some fear that power (The greedy King Rat) and some seek to command it themselves (the wicked Clockmaker and the Professional Princess.)

The story begins by introducing the reader to three children in turn. Zam the baker, Bathsheba friend of giants, and cellist, Phoebe. Each is about to discover a magical object with great power which they will need to use to save the kingdom from those who would control it. I loved how each character was introduced in their own chapters before their stories intertwined.  It gave me time to get to know what was special and individual about them before they combined forces for the greater good.

Chris Riddell has created a fantastical kingdom where the everyday and the fairy tale collide. He has reinvented beloved fairy tale plots and themes, blending them into his world with witty twists and brilliant new characters – such as the legendary cloud horses. The pages are dripping with Chris’s gorgeous trademark pencil illustrations which bring the story and its players to life!

There’s also a stunning fold-out guide to Giants of The Great Wood for readers to enjoy!

This would be a brilliant independent read for confident readers aged 7+ or as a read-aloud by even younger children. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next instalment!
