‘The Island at the Edge of the Night,’ by Lucy Strange, cover by Katie Hickey.

Sometimes books come along that you know you are going to want to read in peace, which is precisely why I saved this book to enjoy as soon as the Easter holidays started. Any new title from Lucy Strange immediately jumps to the top of my ‘to be read’ pile. I love her seamless blend of gothic mysteries, nature, and family secrets.

“Abandoned at a boarding school on a bleak and remote Scottish island, Faye discovers that she and the other pupils have been sent there for doing something wicked. But what is it that Faye has done?

She might be bold enough to explore the prison-like island but has she the courage to face a secret deep within herself?”

I have to confess to gulping this tale down greedily in two helpings. I was totally drawn in to Faye’s story and desperate to unravel the mystery of what had happened to her.

The wonderful location of the remote, weather-beaten Auk Island perfectly set the scene for a corrective ‘school’ for children who had been deemed ‘wicked.’ And the children themselves were just as interesting!

I’m not going to say anymore, except to urge you to read ‘The Island at the Edge of Night’ and then go back and read anything of Lucy’s that you already haven’t.

Jo.
