Dive into the hidden depths of Abukir Bay, Egypt and discover the incredible sunken treasures and lost cities of Ancient Egypt.

This publication was produced to accompany the BP exhibition: Sunken Cities: Egypt’s Lost Worlds at The British Museum, which runs until the 27th November.

When this arrived, it was snatched out of my hands by my super sidekick and immediately read from cover-to-cover – a sure sign of a great book!  And I have to say, when I was finally allowed to read it, I have to agree.

It tells the story of the discovery of the lost cities of Canopus and Thonis-Heracleion by a captain of the Royal Air Force in 1933.  The area was thoroughly explored, uncovering stone columns and sculptures.

Then, in 1996 when technology had advanced, underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio and his team used sonar to create maps of the seabed.  These showed the crew where to dig and led to the revealing of the sunken treasures…

Glossy double-page spreads guide you through the treasures uncovered using photos, illustrations, charts and text.   There are also really useful key word boxes to explain any tricky vocabulary.

One of my favourite sections was ‘It’s All Greek to Me!’ which explains how the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians interacted with each other and the evidence we have that they were able to communicate.  I always find it difficult to imagine these two time periods overlapping as they’re always taught separately!  There are also sections on gods and mummification so plenty to keep readers interested.
