‘The Phantom Lollipop Man!’ By Pamela Butchart, illustrated by Thomas Flintham.

We’ve already had children asking for this in the school library – the mark of an excellent book series! I’m sure they won’t be disappointed by the newest instalment of Izzy’s adventures – The Phantom Lollipop Man!

Every day for, well, forever, the same grumpy old lollipop man has safely escorted Izzy and her pals across the road to school. Until one day a new lollipop lady appears.  What’s going on?

After braving the fearsome office ladies (the holders of all knowledge), the gang fear the worst has happened to poor old Jack.  Some ‘paranormal’ disturbances around the school only convince them further and they set out to investigate his disappearance in their own inimitable way.

As a teacher, I really enjoy the witty observations of life in a school – cake celebrations in the staffroom, sneaking to the library for some peace and quiet, gate-keeper office ladies! You can tell the series is written by someone who works in the education system.

Fans of this series will absolutely not be disappointed. The Phantom Lollipop Man is full of the laughs, fainting and wild jumping to conclusions which make these books so brilliant.  At the same time, I loved the way that the gang’s kind-hearted side comes into play.  Their concern for Jack the lollipop man is heartfelt and the ending is truly touching.

I have a feeling this book won’t be on the library shelf for long!
