‘Lunch on a Pirate Ship,’ by Caryl Hart, illustrated by Kristina Stephenson.

Book Boy and I took a little time out of the heat this afternoon to enjoy one of the latest picture books from firm household favourite, Caryl Hart.

Jack is far too busy laying outside to hear his mum calling him in for dinner, so unfortunately by the time he notices, his chips have gone soggy and his baked beans crunchy.  There’s nothing for it to run away and have lunch with a very friendly bunch of pirates aboard their ship. Sadly, their offering’s even worse than soggy chips! So Jack and the crew follow their noses (and their stomachs) on the search for treasure of the edible variety. Eventually they stumble across a table laden with delicious goodies, but surely it’s too good to be true…..

This book got the double thumbs-up from Book Boy and is to be shelved on the ‘keep for ourselves’ bookcase.  He loved the bouncy rhyming text, humorous illiustrations and funny characters, whilst I loved the way that Caryl Hart has once again managed to capture the way a child’s imagination has the power to take them absolutely anywhere.

Library Girl.

*Many thanks to Caryl for sending me this copy of her book to revuew*
