‘Taking Time,’ by Jo Loring-Fisher.

This dreamy picture book is inspired by the principles of mindfulness. Lots of school practise mindfulness techniques to help their pupils reduce anxiety and stress levels. It encourages people to live in the moment and acknowledge what their senses are detecting.

This poem takes readers on a journey around the world, engaging their senses in different ways as they’re invited to marvel at some of the wonderful sights and sounds of our beautiful planet.  We’re encouraged to pause for a moment and focus on our surroundings.

Book Boy Jr. and I loved exploring the map at the front of the book and using the objects on it to help us locate where each page was set. We also had some interesting conversations about the illustrations and their content – the Northern Lights, riding a camel and the traditional architecture in Russia!

Loring-Fisher’s dreamy illustrations use such a calming, washed-out palette that they perfectly match the relaxed, contemplative feel of the text.
